CLY4EVR

I brought a camera to the CLY4EVR wedding.  Eliza's 30D, the 17-85IS USM, and a 580EX flash.  I think I had better gear than the wedding photographer?  I couldn't make out what lens she was using.  However, one thing was apparent to me.  The photographer was fearless, while I cowerd in the corner of a circular table.  I've lost a lot of my nerve to just get up and take pictures of people.  Have I taken too many pictures of birds and flowers?  I tried to work it out of my system, but just couldn't seem to do it.  Still, I did manage to get a few snaps off without dissolving into a gooey mess.  Pictures obviously got better when I wasn't afraid to stalk people and wait for the real smiles.  Lots to learn still.  My in camera composure needs work, I need to be more creative, I need to get a better lens.

Charlie and Lori are finally married.  There aren't many people that have dated longer than Eliza and I have.  Congratulations you two.  The wedding was sweet, and the reception was a lot of fun.

Coffee drinkers, do you suffer from caffeine withdrawal?  Are your caffeine free hours getting shorter and shorter?  Well, let me introduce you to my home remedy.

Get your mug of hot coffee, but be sure to get something sweet to distract you from the pain.  Today's headache placebo device is the Almond Crush Pocky.  Very effective.  I may have to do a few control tests to see if works without the headache.

You really can't say that Chicago is known for it's BBQ.  It's just not.  We've got Chicago style hotdogs, Chicago style pizza, Italian Beef, and some could would passionately argue that we're known for our steaks.  But BBQ?  Maybe this will change one day, maybe not.  Still, it's nice to see that two years later, the small place close to church is still packing them in day in day out.

In clockwise order, Chopped brisket, sauce, peach cobbler, mac n cheese, slaw.

Whenever a former native comes into town, I end up gorging myself at restaurants.  Weekends turn into food fests, and this was no different.  Friday was hotpot night at Lao Sze Chuan.  Saturday was Egg Harbor for lunch.  We broke bread at Smoque on Sunday.

Now, there are probably better out there in the great state of Texas.  I wouldn't know, I've never tried.  Some say that Lem's holds the crown as best ribs in Chicago.  But, I would like to think that I know something about ribs.  My proof would be a three day rib eating, heart clogging road trip from Chicago to Memphis.  When comparing Smoque to the rest of the places of Chicago, it all boils down to this. Less sauce, more meat, more smoke, and yes more Smoque please.

You should really read their manifesto.

A fine lunch

I had one of the best lunches I have ever had on a work day.  Two words.

Hot Doug's

Pablo, Seung, Eliza, and myself went out to Hot Doug's for lunch today.  The line wasn't too bad when we got there, as we shimmed up next to the bricked in door frame.  But even in this cold, the line went down past the building and half way to the alley by the time we got inside.

I had a Dr Brown's Black Cherry Soda, the foie gras and sauternes sausage, and the game of the week (Bacon and Cheddar Elk Sausage).  We split a large fries between the four of us.  I need to have more lunches like this.  I had to fight the sluggish feeling of food coma with a healthy dose of coffee.

On a different note, I noticed that Midway games had closed it's Chicago office across the street.  I had read that they were closing up shop, but seeing is believing as they say.  It's sad to see such a storied shop flame out and leave Chicago with a hole in it's small family of game studios.

What pistonheads lost and didn't even know it

Late night TV was custom made for people like me. Someone who stays up late and pilots the couch into the bliss of late night talk shows.  It's really rather amusing, yet heart breaking to see the amount of negative energy gushing from the talk show hosts.  Letterman is showing his humanity in that his wounds from '92 still hurt after not getting the Tonight show from Carson.  Ferguson and Kimmel are fanning the flames mostly because they can and want to see what happens.  Poor Fallen is caught speechless and really wants to stay on NBC while he crafts and hones his own identity.  And then there is Leno and Conan.

Some may say this is all Jay's fault. Yeah, it is his fault but not entirely.  He may be on at 10:00, but he's being paid like a king to be there.  Wave seven zeroes at me, and I'll pretty much do what you want too.  Another thing to take note of, is that NBC is too use to having the best of breed in late night talk shows.  It's readily apparent that they don't know how to do anything else too.  NBC has four late night talk shows nearly back to back.  Who does that?  Why do that?  This is a programming problem.  And now, well, I wouldn't be surprised if Jay and Conan left NBC.  Jay's reputation is tarnishing quickly, Conan has burned bridges, and NBC is left broken.

The thing is, I am a fan of both guys.  I like watching The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.  I like Jay Leno.  There's a difference there.  Conan's show, while sometimes painful, has spasmatic bits of brilliance gleaming from the rough.  It's slowly polishing itself.  Jay Leno however, is the guy's guy.  A funny man, that just so happens to have a stable full of cars.  That is what I hope Jay sees is his next big thing.

After watching the first couple of Jay Leno shows, I was really hoping the car racing would be better.  That was the hook that he definitely caught me with.  Celebrities doing time trials in an unobtainable EV Focus.  I was hoping that his new show would be like a funny BBC Top Gear , but it didn't have the proper feel.  The competition was too over the top in gags.  But Jay is on to something here.  I would love to see him fashion a new talk show formed more around cars, where cars and celebrities are the draw.

Top Gear has had its way with the UK and the internet.  American gear heads run to youtube after each airing to watch it because it's not available here.  Jay could easily fill that need.  In some ways he has already.  I am a huge fan of Jay's website, jaylenosgarage.com .  The website obviously is a pet project of his, but you can tell that he has a passion for it.  He's spent time, and considerable amounts of money in sharing his love of cars.  NBC, isn't it obvious?  Use this man's love of cars into his next career!

Jay's new show should be about celebrities and the cars they drive, the cars they race, the cars they've lost.  The first guest should be Papa John himself and his glorious search for his long lost gold 1971 1/2 Carmaro Z28.  Then put on a review and track test of the new and old Camaro.  That would be a killer show!  Something that people could relate to as well.  Who doesn't fondly remember their first car?  Mine was a horrible thing that would shake viciously above 55mph, where its interior dome light would turn on because the chassis was deforming when I made a hard turn, and one that gave me the freedom to come and go as I choose.

Sadly, I think this dream show of mine, and maybe Jay's too, will never come to pass.  This type of show would need to be made while you have the cache to do so.  Jay may have lost some of that.  American pistonheads, take note of the late night host drama, it could have been so very different.
