And then there were two

Apparently when a small carbureted engine "surges", it means you're having a fuel issue. Something is impeding the flow of gas to the engine. Could be anything from debris in the fuel tank, a clogged fuel filter, a clogged fuel vent, or a gummy carburetor with clogged jets. Sadly, it wasn't a clogged fuel vent cap. I went ahead and attacked every other aspect to make sure I caught the problem.

I drained and cleaned out the gas tank. There was obvious debris floating around in there. For the curious, I removed the fuel filter and lines before freeing the tank from the chassis. I sprayed copious amounts of carb cleaner and swished the tank around like a glass of wine. Very satisfying seeing the visible grit fall out into my drain pan. This could have been the issue, but I'm doubtful.

I then went ahead and cleaned off the fuel filter itself. It's basically a simple screen filter tube on this engine. More carb cleaner took care of that.

Next in line was the carburetor. Having done this once before, it wasn't too stressful of an experience. Unlike the last session however, the float bowl had a good amount of debris in it. More carb cleaner and some clean shop towels were in order. Even the bolt that holds the float bowl on had a lot of gunk on it. That too got dressed in a deluge of carb cleaner. These two bits I'm pretty sure were the source of my issues.

I then went ahead and went after the jets and the passages in the carb body. Gotta leave no stone unturned, and well I was already in too deep not to. They looked very clean. It was obvious that the 50/50 seafom and gas concoction did a great job. But even seafoam has its limits when there's crap floating around in the float bowl. I took a wire to all of the holes in the jet and venturi.

It only took about an hour or so, but it was immensely satisfying to get this engine running smoothly again. Final parts are being sent for. The rubber auger bits, scraper bar, and a replacement drive belt are on their way. The weakest link will still be that nicked timing belt. But I'd rather keep an eye on that. It's a bear of a job, and I'm fairly certain the current belt is going to last a long time.

E asked me, "Why do we need two snowblowers?" Yeah I've got nothing. Actually we have three... Not sure I'm going to try to go for the trifecta this year. It's an older Toro S-200 that's been sitting for eight years. That carb and fuel tank are probably a wreck. And I really don't like dealing with mixed fuel.
